DaWanda expands core business with launch of new Do-It-Yourself portal "DIY With Love"

Berlin, September 7, 2015. DaWanda, Europe's largest online marketplace for unique and handmade products today launches the portal "DIY with love". The company is expanding its traditional core business of being a marketplace for handmade products through posting thousands of DIY instructions along with a place to buy the necessary materials. To make it happen, a new 20 strong DIY team was set up. This makes DaWanda the first provider in Europe to offer distribution of all the necessary elements around the “handmade” concept from a single source: from the initial inspiration to step-by-step instructions to all the materials that can be ordered with a few clicks directly to your home. The first tutorials went live back in 2008. By August 2015, the site traffic had reached a record high; more than 1.4 million hits on the existing tutorials this month alone. As a result, the page impressions rose by more than 200% from the previous year – a clear demonstration of the success and popularity of the DIY movement. DIY has evolved into an independent business segment, and in the German market alone, classic techniques such as sewing, knitting and crocheting rose by 35% since 2009 to EUR 1.3 billion (Source: Initiative Handarbeit). There’s no end in sight to this trend in growth.

The DIY market has on the German and wider European level great potential, which we want to utilise with our new portal. By expanding our business model, we intend to expand our market leadership in the DIY and handmade field even further.

says Claudia Helming, founder and CEO of DaWanda GmbH

For the launch of "DIY with love" there are already over 600 DIY tutorials to choose from, with another 20 a week being added, including some paid premium content. "Inspiring content is part of DaWanda’s DNA. We are a social-commerce company with a very vibrant community. Interaction is therefore an integral part of the DIY portal," explains Ms. Helming.
